Prize-winning philosopher Daisy Dixon explores the provocative history of artworks that have shocked, outraged and divided audiences, from ancient artefacts and Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary music and film. At a time when debates around censorship, public monuments and artistic responsibility are increasingly contentious, she asks why disturbing art continues to fascinate us and what our reactions reveal about ourselves. Challenging easy assumptions about morality and culture, she examines the complex relationship between creativity, harm and judgement, making the case for engaging with difficult art rather than simply condemning it.
