A talk titled 'A City under Siege: Chester in the English Civil War' is scheduled for 3 November 2026 at Ye Olde Boot Inn in Chester. The event will explore Chester's role during the English Civil War, focusing on the city's siege and its historical significance. Dr Sam Chadwick, an early modern historian, will lead the discussion.
Uncover the story of Chester’s Civil War siege with a historian and a reenactor at one of the city’s oldest pubs.
Despite its name, the English Civil War was a series of conflicts that engulfed not just England but the whole of Britain - and Chester found itself at the heart of the first of these struggles. The city endured a long and brutal siege that brought it so low that, by the end, “weeds were growing in the main streets”.
Join us at Ye Olde Boot Inn on Eastgate Row, which first opened its doors as an inn in 1643 - just as the conflict was tightening its grip on the city - for a talk exploring Chester’s turbulent past.
Dr Sam Chadwick, an early modern historian who teaches about the English Civil War, riots and rebellions, will guide you through the trials and tribulations of the period. From the reasons war broke out to Chester’s role in the conflict and the siege itself, he’ll explore the Boot’s own place in the story and what everyday life was like for the people caught up in it.
Mike Graham, a reenactor and local history enthusiast, will bring the period to life with a look at the clothes, equipment and experiences of the common soldier.
During the evening, we’d warmly encourage you to support our wonderful local businesses by picking up a drink from the bar.
