About This Event

Constable Ambisonic returns with a rescheduled concert on 5 September 2026, at Cuckoo Farm Studios in Colchester. Matt Shenton and Stuart Bowditch aim to bring to life the natural landscapes that inspired John Constable through their live performance, drawing inspiration from recordings made at the very locations of his paintings. The event, which is free, promises an atmospheric experience where music seamlessly blends with the serene surroundings that captivated Constable. Audiences can expect a captivating journey through sound and melody, evoking the essence of the artist's work in a unique and immersive setting.

Live performances by Matt and Stuart responding to recordings made at the locations of two John Constable paintings.

As part of the Constable Ambisonic project, sound artist Stuart Bowditch has been making 360º spatial audio recordings of the locations of 20 paintings by John Constable. You’ll be able to hear stereo versions of these recordings at ‘The Hay Wain: Walking Constable’s Landscape’ exhibition at Christchurch Mansions in Ipswich from July. There will also be a series of six live events to listen to the ambisonic recordings, that will also include sonic performances by commissioned artists responding to the recording.

In this rescheduled event, sound artist Matt Shenton (there are no birds here) will respond to ‘Landscape near East Bergholt: evening’ painted in 1812, and Stuart is responding to ‘The Hay Wain’ painted in 1821.

These events are part of the Constable250 project celebrating Constasble’s anniversary. Constable Ambisonic is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through an Arts Council Project Grant, with match funding from Colchester and Ipswich Museums, and support from National Trust Flatford. They are also sponsored by www.branchoutproductions.com
