Discover the landscape, stories and creative heritage of the Dedham Vale on a guided walk to the Bottengoms garden.
Starting at St Andrew's Church, Wormingford, we'll follow historic lanes and field paths to Bottengoms, the former home of writer Ronald Blythe and artists John and Christine Nash. The walk is 6km and will take approximately 3.5 hours.
Along the way, we'll explore the Dedham Vale's rich artistic and literary heritage, from Constable and Gainsborough to Cedric Morris, and discover how Bottengoms became a gathering place for artists, writers and creative friends.
At Bottengoms, we'll explore the garden – its history, plants and wildlife – and learn about the work being undertaken to restore it as a haven for nature and creativity.
Please note that the route includes uneven ground and farmland with livestock – sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are essential.
Bottengoms house is not open to visitors and does not form part of the tour.
Tickets are offered on a donation basis, with a suggested donation of £20 per person.

Walking route questions
How long is the walk?
The walk is approximately 6km in total and lasts around 3 hours, including the guided garden tour at Bottengoms. Please note that the length can vary depending on weather and time for discussion.
Where can I park?
Parking is available in the field along Church Road (on the left if approaching from Wormingford village centre), south of St Andrew's Church. Parking is also available at The Crown In, please park towards the back of the car park. Please note that it is a short walk from the pub to the meeting point.
Where do I meet the group?
Please meet in the parking field on Church Road next to St Andrew's Church.
What should I wear and/or bring with me?
The route follows uneven ground, field paths and farmland with livestock, so sturdy walking shoes or boots are essential. Please bring weather-appropriate clothing, sun protection, water and any snacks you may require. Binoculars are also encouraged.
Will there be toilet facilities?
There are no toilet facilities along the route or at Bottengoms. The Crown Inn opens at 12pm, customers can use their facilities.
Is the walk suitable for everyone?
Participants should be comfortable walking approximately 6km over uneven ground, field paths and farmland. Please note that we cannot host children under 14, under 18s need to attend with a responsible adult.
