About This Event

The ROAM project launches at Derby QUAD on 24 September 2026 with a screening of new animations by artists Edd Carr, Grace Lee and Sarah Silverwood. Animate partners with the venue to present these works as part of the Roam initiative inspired by the Right To Roam. This cinematic event offers viewers an opportunity to witness fresh artistic interpretations before the public release. The programme runs at 17:00 hours.

A screening of new artists’ animations by Edd Carr, Grace Lee and Sarah Silverwood.

Animate is pleased to partner with QUAD to host the launch event for the Roam project. Artists Sarah Silverwood, Edd Carr and Grace Lee have each made a short film inspired by the Right to Roam campaign movement, and its vision of “a future countryside in which people not only enjoy the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of nature but serve as its guardians too.”

This is an opportunity to see the new films and to hear from artists Edd Carr and Sarah Silverwood about their inspirations and creative processes. They will be joined in a Q&A with Jon Moses, writer, campaigner and co-founder of Right to Roam, and Johnny Campbell, folk singer and member of Right to Roam’s Sheffield group.

The films were developed through a period of research, supported by discussions with Jon Moses and the team at Animate Projects. They reflect on themes of belonging, ancestry, enclosure, privatisation, colonial legacy, access islands, mysticism and witchcraft. These rich, mixed media animations have put environmental considerations and sustainability at the forefront of their techniques, and include foraged wood, cyanotype made with boiled oak bark, oak gall ink painting on paper, film developed in oak tannin, and archival imagery.

This event is supported by Arts Council England. Thanks to our partners, Fonic and Right to Roam.
