After a summer of record-breaking heatwaves, followed by the recent torrential rains, how do our deepest beliefs compel us to act? The intense summer heat and heavy downpours are a stark reminder that the climate crisis is here.

Join us at Derby Cathedral during the Helios installation to explore how our faiths give us the tools to respond to climate justice, featuring two distinct lenses:

The Christian Perspective by The Revd Prof Charlotte Sleigh: The Biblical teaching about caring for God's creation and protecting our vulnerable neighbours.

The Muslim Perspective by Dr Ali Akbar: Honouring the sacred trust (Khalifa) to restore Earth's balance.

The Revd Prof Charlotte Sleigh

University College London

Charlotte Sleigh is an Anglican priest and academic in Science & Technology Studies at UCL. Her research, teaching and activism centre around climate change and the spiritual resources that are needed to respond to its many challenges. Her most recent book is Science, Religion and the Human Future (OUP, 2026), co-authored with Amanda Rees.

Dr Ali Akbar

Derby University

Dr Ali is a Lecturer in Social and Community Studies and Muslim Chaplain at the University of Derby, with academic interests in identity, culture, and communities. He is also General Secretary of Minhaj Scholar Forums UK. His work explores ethical and faith-based perspectives on contemporary global challenges, with particular interest in equity, social justice, and the climate crisis.
