Join historian Tom Hartley as he uncovers the forgotten story of The Al Rawdah, internment, and Ireland's infamous prison ship.

The Museum of Free Derry is delighted to welcome renowned historian and author Tom Hartley for a special lunchtime talk on his latest book, The Al Rawdah.

In this compelling new work, Hartley explores the little-known history of internment without trial in the north of Ireland during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Central to the story is The Al Rawdah, the infamous prison ship moored on Strangford Lough, where internees were held in harsh and often inhumane conditions.

Drawing on extensive research, Hartley uncovers this overlooked chapter of Irish history, examining the political context, the experiences of those imprisoned, and the enduring legacy of internment.

Following the talk, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and purchase a signed copy of The Al Rawdah.
