Scale St. Laurence’s Gate, our 14th century fortress and soak in

breath-taking panoramic views of Drogheda!

Drogheda was medieval Ireland’s most important city, after Dublin. To defend its prestige, the original 1170s earthen ramparts were upgraded to formidable stone walls. St Laurence’s Gate, an impressive defensive gateway featuring twin round towers, a portcullis, and an overhead wooden operating platform was built in the 14th century. Maintained for centuries, St. Laurence’s Gate served as legendary symbols of the town's historic power.

Treasured by the people of Drogheda, a community lead campaign in 2016 led to the closing of the Gate to traffic, especially heavy goods vehicles, with the aim of protecting and preserving this important local structure. The monument is managed by the Office of Public Works and is listed is the register of National Monuments (LH024-041005)

Since being closed to traffic, St. Laurence’s Gate has played host to Music at the Gate and Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann events. It is envisaged that St. Laurence’s Gate should be a place of cultural and heritage celebrations and it is the intention of Louth County Council to undertake public realm improvement works including the enhancing of the surrounding pavements, interpretative history inlays, upgrading public lighting and traffic management to ensure that this heritage structure is protected and showcased. This event, as part of the Drogheda Festival of Ideas, is to galvanise community support for public realm works and community events at the foot of St. Laurence’s Gate.
