About This Event

This lecture series, marking Dublin's Festival of History 2026, will take place at Tallaght Library on 28 September 2026. Organised by SDCC Libraries, the event features Kieran Swords Memorial Lecture with Dr. Robert Sinnott. The session will explore the history of the Irish language in South Dublin County and examine local place names. Entry to the talk is free.

With Dr. Robert Sinnott

Marking Dublin's Festival of History 2026. Join Dr. Robert Sinnott to learn about the history of the Irish language in South Dublin County. Discover how our place names can reveal clues as to a dialect of Irish from some of the last locations in Dublin to feature native Irish speakers. Robert Sinnott was awarded a PhD in 2022 on 'A History and Phonological Study of the Native Modern Irish of Co. Wexford.'

This lecture is dedicated to the memory of Kieran Swords, late County Librarian for SDCC Libraries. Kieran was passionate about local history and contributed enormously to the creation and development of the Local Studies Collection at the County Library in Tallaght. Kieran sadly passed away in 2015 and his loss is still greatly felt by SDCC Libraries and the the wider community.
