About This Event

The TCD School of English Evening Lectures, Michaelmas Term 2026 will be held on 29 September 2026 at the Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin in Dublin, featuring various performers. The event will cost between €4.00 and €50.00.

An introduction to major authors of poetry, drama and prose, chosen from among those prescribed for the Leaving Certificate 2027.

About this event

This lecture series, delivered by the Trinity School of English staff, will provide an introduction to major authors of poetry, drama and prose through close examination of selected texts, chosen from among those prescribed for the Leaving Certificate. The course will be of special interest to teachers and pupils preparing for the examination but the lectures will be directed towards a more general audience as well.

Fee

€ 50 for the entire series. Individual lectures are € 5 each. Concessionary rates for the full series will be € 40 or individual lecture € 4 each. The concessionary rate applies to: students, OAPs, unemployed, groups of 20+, TCD staff and Graduates.

Date, Time and Place

Tuesdays 19:00-20:00, Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin. Tickets available via Eventbrite. It is also possible to pay on the door at the night, however, only those who have pre-booked can be guaranteed admission.

Schedule

There will be ten weekly lectures beginning on 29 September and ending on the 8 December 2026. Lectures will start at 7pm on Tuesdays. Eventbrite registration for individual lectures will close at 6pm on the relevant day.

27 October 2026 - Reading Week, no lecture

3 November 2026 - Professor Chris Morash: The Poems of Elizabeth Bishop

10 November 2026 - Professor Darryl Jones: George Orwell, 1984

17 November 2026 - Dr Rosie Lavan: Carol Reed, The Third Man

24 November 2026 - Professor Nicholas Grene: The Poems of Derek Mahon

1 December 2026 - Dr Paul Delaney: Claire Keegan, Small Things Like These

8 December 2026 - Dr Tom Walker: The Poems of Paula Meehan

Online/Video Recordings of Lectures

The lectures are happening live in the Edmund Burke Theatre, Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin. They will also be recorded. If you purchased a ticket to a particular lecture, to several lectures, or to the entire series, you may request to be emailed a link to the video recording of the lecture or lectures as soon as these are available (usually the next day).

The recordings will be available and watchable at any time until the end of the Evening Lecture series.
