Set against the backdrop of the Eildon Hills, this guided tour of Melrose (Wairds) Cemetery explores the lives and wartime experiences of six Commonwealth war casualties commemorated in Melrose. Through a mixture of CWGC headstones and private family memorials, visitors will discover stories of service, sacrifice, illness, training accidents and loss, while learning about the history and work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The tour also highlights the two additional Commonwealth war graves located elsewhere in Melrose, at Melrose Abbey and Weirhill Cemetery.

The tour lasts approx. 70 mins and covers about 230 metres on paths and grass with uneven ground. There is wheelchair access.

Parking is available on the old road beside the cemetery. Please do not use the crematorium grounds or visitor parking. Visitors arriving by car from either the east or west should approach via the A6091 Melrose Bypass and follow signs for Borders Crematorium. The cemetery is located a short distance further along the road from the crematorium entrance.

There are no facilities on site, the nearest public toilets are located in Melrose town centre. Please bring water if required.

Please dress for the weather and wear suitable footwear.

Only assistance dogs are allowed in the cemetery.

Please note there can be last minute cancellations. This can be due to various reasons including illness, site issues and weather. We will email you as soon as we can, but this could include the morning of the tour, so please check your emails prior to leaving for the tour.

The Commonwealth War Graves Foundation (CWGF) aims to actively engage all communities with the work of the CWGC by telling the inspiring stories through education and outreach projects.
