Edinburgh artist Colin Maxwell Bryce celebrates with first exhibition of his ninth decade. “…as I see it…” explores the unexpected and unusual often hidden within ordinary objects, landscapes and everyday surroundings. Edinburgh artist and designer Colin Maxwell Bryce will return to Dundas Street Gallery this October with his first solo exhibition since entering his ninth decade. Colin has spent much of his life involved in Scotland’s art, design and creative community. “…as I see it…” brings together new work inspired by ordinary and often unlikely subjects, from the scraped and weather-beaten hulls of sailing boats to fading flowers, rural landscapes and the surfaces and shapes of our built environment. The exhibition reflects Colin’s long-standing fascination with the creative and abstract potential of the everyday. Such a focus can become the starting point for images applying new forms and colours, while revealing distinctive rhythms, shapes and patterns. Throughout the exhibition, visitors are invited to look again at things that might otherwise pass unnoticed and to see the familiar presented from an unfamiliar perspective. His involvement in practice began when he left full-time work, exploring in more depth the creative potential of digital photography and image making. Now 81, his curiosity about the visual world around him remains very much intact, with this exhibition bringing together his latest explorations of shape, colour, texture and abstraction. He says… ”It has always been difficult to walk past anything that catches my eye and causes me to take a second look. It might be a casual walk in the woods, a visit to the seashore or simply passing along the pavement in an urban environment. That initial attraction is often the start of a process that involves my camera, my computer and most importantly my subjective response. The resulting imagery is very much “…as I see it…”! Colin will be at Dundas Street Gallery throughout the exhibition and will be delighted to welcome visitors, talk about the work and share the ideas and processes behind it.
