This November, two independent Scottish furniture studios come together for a celebration of contemporary furniture, thoughtful design, beautiful materials and the wonderful possibilities of making things by hand.

FORMA | LIGNUM brings together Cairnwood Studio and Sundt Studios for a unique exhibition at Leith Makers in the heart of Edinburgh.

From beautifully crafted hardwood furniture and intricate woven details to imaginative designs, unexpected textures and playful explorations of form, this exhibition is an invitation to discover furniture beyond the ordinary.

🌿 Two studios. Two creative perspectives. One shared passion for making.

Cairnwood Studio, founded by furniture maker Dina Halkett and based in East Lothian, creates contemporary handcrafted furniture with a focus on thoughtful design, natural materials and traditional craftsmanship. With a curious and experimental approach, Dina frequently ventures beyond conventional furniture making, drawing inspiration from weaving, origami and other craft disciplines to introduce unexpected details, textures and techniques into her work.

Sundt Studios brings its own distinctive design perspective to the exhibition, creating an exciting dialogue between two independent makers united by their appreciation of craftsmanship, materials and creative exploration.

Together, the studios invite visitors to experience furniture not simply as functional objects, but as expressions of individuality, creativity and the skill of the human hand.

✨ WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

Discover an inspiring collection of contemporary furniture, including beautifully crafted tables, benches, seating and other distinctive pieces. Explore the warmth and character of natural timber, the intricate beauty of traditional and experimental weaving techniques, and the small, thoughtful details that make handcrafted furniture truly special.

Every piece has its own story, from the first spark of an idea through the challenges, happy accidents and countless hours of designing, experimenting, refining and making.

Whether you're passionate about interior design, appreciate traditional craftsmanship, love discovering independent Scottish makers, or are simply curious about the creative process, there will be plenty to explore.

And unlike a conventional furniture showroom, this is an opportunity to meet the makers, discover the thinking behind the designs, ask questions and get a glimpse into the wonderful (and occasionally chaotic!) world of furniture making.
