A panel discussion on mentorship for emerging poets will be held at The Pleasance Edinburgh on 12 November 2026. The session will feature representatives from various organisations discussing the importance of mentorship schemes and the support they provide to new writers.
Starting out in any profession can be daunting, and the poetry world can seem particularly opaque – which is why mentorship schemes for emerging writers can be invaluable. Join our panel of Caitrin Armstrong, Head of Writing Communities at the Scottish Book Trust, Jim Carruth from the Clydebuilt Verse Apprenticeship Scheme and Nick Makoha from the Obsidian Foundation, to learn more about what mentorships are and what they aren’t. We’ll be discussing what support these organisations can offer, what challenges mentorship schemes can help you overcome, and what you might want to consider when applying. Chaired through the ConVERSE Emerging Chairs Programme with the University of Edinburgh
