The school combines academic study with small class sizes, high levels of pastoral care and a strong focus on character and opportunities beyond the classroom. Merchiston offers a broad academic curriculum including National 5s and GCSEs, with pupils able to study Scottish Highers and A Levels in the Sixth Form, alongside a broad programme spanning sport, the arts, outdoor learning and co-curricular activities. Merchiston has specialist sporting programmes in rugby, tennis and golf, and attracts both day pupils from Edinburgh and boarding pupils from across the UK and internationally. The Forest at Merchiston, which opened in September 2024, extends the school’s provision to younger children, offering a co-educational Nursery and Junior education for children aged 3 to 10. Children follow a robust academic curriculum, enriched by an outdoor learning approach that uses Merchiston’s extensive grounds and natural environment as an extension of the classroom. The primary school is growing year-on-year, with provision planned to extend through to P7 by 2028.
