Taking place in the lead-up to Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, the trail draws on the lesser-known Mictlan mythology and its nine-level journey through the underworld. The Edinburgh launch will be the first in a series of trails that Spirit Cartel plans to introduce across cities in the UK. In Nahua mythology, Mictlan is the underworld, made up of nine levels that souls journeyed through on their passage into the world beyond. Each level has its own stories, landscapes and encounters, providing the inspiration for the Mictlan Trail. Each of the nine participating venues will represent one level of Mictlan, creating an exclusive tequila or mezcal cocktail inspired by its stories, environments and experiences. Each bar will put its own creative spin on its assigned level, using distinctive flavours and ingredients to bring the mythology to life through its cocktail. With venues spanning Edinburgh, the trail will take guests from Lady Libertine in the New Town to The False Widow and The Mother Superior in Leith, with Dragonfly, The Voodoo Rooms and The Powder Room , with further participating venues still to be announced. With the Mictlan Trail, we’re giving bartenders the chance to have some fun with our agave brands and show just how versatile these spirits can be in cocktails. The Mictlan Trail, will give guests the chance to visit all nine participating venues, with a different Mictlan-inspired cocktail to discover at each stop. Guests can pick up a Mictlan Passport from any participating venue and collect a stamp each time they visit a bar and try its trail cocktail. Stamps will unlock rewards along the way, and guests who complete all nine stops will be entered into a prize draw for the chance to win a trip to Munich, one of San Cosme Mezcal’s key hubs, including recommendations from the San Cosme team on where to eat, drink and explore. The Edinburgh trail marks the inaugural Mictlan Trail, with the company looking to take the concept to other cities across the UK in the future, including London and Manchester. The launch forms part of Spirit Cartel’s continued focus on building awareness of premium agave spirits and working with bartenders to demonstrate their range and versatility in cocktails.
