About This Event

The "Natural Lacquer workshop" will occur on 20 September 2026 at St James Quarter in Edinburgh. Attendees will explore East Asian lacquer art through a contemporary marbling experience.

Discover the beauty of East Asian lacquer art through a contemporary marbling experience. Natural lacquer, known as "Urushi" in Japan and traditionally used throughout China and East Asia, has been treasured for thousands of years for its durability, elegance, and unique surface effects. While lacquer has traditionally been applied to furniture, vessels, and decorative objects, contemporary artists continue to explore new creative possibilities with this remarkable material. In this hands-on workshop, participants will experiment with floating lacquer techniques inspired by marbling processes. Colours are carefully floated and manipulated to create unique patterns before being transferred onto bookmarks. Customers will be able to take home 1 fan and bookmarks of their creations. No prior experience is required. Participants will learn about the history of lacquer, observe demonstrations, and create their own personalised designs. About the artists: Ash Lab was co-founded by Yuki and Le Liu, two UK-based artists and designers recognized by the UK government with the Global Talent for their exceptional contributions to the arts. Le Liu is a versatile artist and senior instructor specializing in oil painting, sketching, watercolor, and illustration. A graduate of the Glasgow School of Art (MA in Art Practice), Le’s work has earned prestigious recognition, including the UK Art Artists Exhibition 2022 and the BADA Award 2023. Yuki is an artist and designer with a focus on watercolor, oil painting, sketching, Chinese traditional painting, and graphic design.
