PhotoForum - Visualising Human Rights is a one-day workshop scheduled for 11 December 2026 at AGITATE in Edinburgh. The session examines ethical storytelling frameworks and methodologies through professional presentations and practical exercises related to human rights visualisation.
How do we tell visual stories about Human Rights? As responsible image makers which strategies should we consider for ethical storytelling?
This one day workshop takes a look at existing frameworks and methodologies used in visualising Human Rights. Through professional presentations and practical exercises we shall consider the process of creative production in relation to ethics and visual language. Drawing from post-colonial discourse, and in keeping with the festival’s theme of Dignity, Freedom and Justice, we shall examine how existing power relations are maintained through the visual referencing of societal archetypes, simplifying narratives, and the use of historical rhetoric. In counterpoint to a privately owned and operated media, we shall further discuss how best to promote and amplify Human Rights visual storytelling though community networks and alternative media, both physical and digital.
Visual storytelling for Human Rights workshop is being hosted by AGITATE and supported by qualified Human Rights professionals and photographers with real-life experience from the field of visual reporting. During the discussions and practical exercises participants will be encouraged to share current work, or projects they are interested in developing in relation to Human Rights issues. This workshop is for anyone interested in Human Rights and photography, and for those who are either working or traveling with a camera, and have an interest in visual storytelling.
