Queer Chair Yoga with Queer Yoga Edinburgh is an LGBTQ+ open yoga session at Duncan Place Community Hub in Edinburgh. The event is free to attend, except for a small fee.
Queer yoga open to everyone!
October schedule
About the event
Through these Chair Yoga sessions, we hope to create a yoga community for LGBTQ+ folks to enjoy a led movement practice and connect with others.
The classes will be run by various members of our teaching team, usually with one lead teacher and one supporting.
These classes are for queer folks who find a chair practice more suitable than mat based practice. Open to all levels of experience. We will have around a 30 minutes movement and meditation practice, followed by around 25 minutes for a tea and chat as we need to vacate the room promptly at 5:45. During the practice we will invite you to take some time to notice how you feel and move in anyway that feels right for you, with options to connect with your breath. We encourage choice in your practice and there are never any expectations on how you practice that day. Group size will be up to 8 people, plus the lead teacher and support teacher.
If you are unsure if class will meet your access needs, or if you have any other questions about the practice, please get in touch .
About the venue
Please aim to arrive 5-10 minutes before class starts. When you get into the building, we expect one of our teachers to be available in the reception area to welcome you and direct you to the room we'll be using. If no one is there, you can ask at the reception desk how to get to the room "Wee Links". You can find out more about the room Wee Links here (https://duncanplace.org/wee-links-room/).
There are wheechair accessible all gender toilets available on the same floor as the venue entrance and the room we'll be using.
The Duncan Place Community Hub website (https://duncanplace.org/) has lots of useful information about the building. You can read about:
Parking (https://duncanplace.org/parking/)
Accessibility (https://duncanplace.org/accessibility-at-duncan-place/)
Directions (https://duncanplace.org/getting-here/)
Animal admittance (https://duncanplace.org/animal-admittance-policy/)
What to bring
We will provide:
Chairs (52cm wide, 82cm tall, with the seat 46cm up from the ground)
Mats
Yoga blocks
Hot and tap water
Mugs
Tea
We suggest you wear clothes you feel comfy moving in. You are welcome to bring your own water bottle if you'd like, plus any other items you'd like to have with you during class.
If you would like to attend with a personal assistant, carer, or other companion in similar capacity they are welcome to join in the yoga session or remain in the room with you. Please just get in contact with us beforehand (through Eventbrite or our website (https://www.queeryogaedinburgh.co.uk)) so we can confirm that we'll have space for them.
Sensory information
We'll be using the "Wee Links" room at Duncan Place Community Hub. This room has several large windows overlooking the car park for the venue. The ground floor of the building is on a higher elevation to the car park so it is not possible to see into the room from the car park or street. You can view photos of the space here (https://duncanplace.org/wee-links-room/).
The room is usually naturally lit or we may use dim, warm lighting if needed. There is a road next to the venue so there could be some traffic noise and there are other people that use the building so you may hear movement, doors closing, or other related sounds. We may play some quiet music depending on the preferences of the group on the day.
