Commemorating the Generation of 1927 with a screening of La novia (Paula Ortiz, 2015). The Cervantes Chair at Edinburgh is delighted to announce a series of three events aimed at marking the forthcoming centenary of the Generation of 1927 and the 90 years that have elapsed since the assassination of Federico García Lorca in particular. The Generation of 1927 was a group of writers, poets, narrators and essayists who, by drawing on popular traditions from an avant-garde perspective, collectively forged a natural language centred on the reality of the things evoked, with the aim of enriching forms of expression and creating a language valid for all, as Guillermo Díaz Plaja put it. On Thursday, 29 October, we invite you to a screening of the feature film The Bride (La novia, 2015), dir. Paula Ortiz, a powerful adaptation of Lorca's play Blood Wedding (Bodas de sangre). Based on Blood Wedding by Federico García Lorca, The Bride tells the story of a love triangle between two men and a woman. Two lovers carried away by their passion defying all moral and social rules, challenge their own judgment. The same day of her wedding, the bride and her lover escape on horseback to live their love. Their disobedience will have devastating consequences. The film will be introduced by Dr Raquel Martínez Martín (Univerisity of Strathclyde).
