States of Emergency: Writing the Plague will take place at The Pleasance Edinburgh on 14 November 2026. Niall O’Gallagher will present translations from his Gaelic novella-in-verse, while Polly Atkin will share poems reflecting on the pandemic and its impact. The event is supported by the Gaelic Books Council.
Niall O’Gallagher will be sharing translations from his upcoming Gaelic novella-in-verse Litreachan Plàighe (Plague Letters), extracts of which have been specially translated for the festival by Deborah Moffatt. Niall was awarded a Scottish Book Trust Ignite Fellowship to complete the collection, which is told through a series of letters. Polly Atkin’s Emergency Dream grows out of the entangled emergencies of our times: social, political and personal. The years of the pandemic are reconfigured as though seasons of a TV show, in poems which insistently centre disabled joy and disabled rage. Supported by the Gaelic Books Council Staid Èiginn: Litrichean Plàighe Thig còmhla ri Polly Atkin agus Niall O’Gallagher airson cuirm far am bi an dithis a’ leughadh bho dà chruinneachadh a tha a’ coimhead ri aonranachd is buntanas ann an àm plàighe. Leughaidh Niall O’Gallagher earrannan bhon nobhaileag-dhàin ùr aige, Litrichean Plàighe, a chaidh an eadar-theangachadh a dh’aona ghnothaich airson na fèise. Fhuair Niall taic bho Chomhaltachd LAS tro Urras Leabhraichean na h-Alba airson crìoch a chur air a’ chruinneachadh, a th’ air aithris mar shreath litrichean. Dh’fhàs Bruadar na h-Èiginn le Polly Atkin a-mach às a’ bhùrach de chùisean èiginn san latha ’n-diugh: sòisealta, poilitigeach agus pearsanta. Tha bliadhnaichean a’ ghalair ann an riochd sreathan de phrògram telebhisein, ann an dàin suidhichte air aoibhneas ciorramach is fearg ciorramach. Le taic bho Chomhairle nan Leabhraichean
