About This Event

Tapestry Talks will explore Scotland’s embroidered art since 1720 at Dovecot Studios, highlighting the history of embroidery through the National Trust for Scotland's collection. Curator Emma Inglis will discuss significant pieces and the stories of the women who created them, including notable figures from various Scottish locations.

Discover the history of embroidery in Scotland across 200 years through the collection of the National Trust for Scotland. Curator Emma Inglis puts the spotlight on NTS highlights, with items large and small, intricate and practical from Newhailes in Musselburgh, Drum Castle and Haddo House in Aberdeenshire, House of the Binns in Linlithgow, the Hill House in Helensburgh and the Weaver’s Cottage in Kilbarchan. She uncovers the stories of the women and girls who worked with remarkable skill to create these works of art including the talented Lorimer family and the crofter’s daughter May Sandison, who went on to a needlework school for Lady Aberdeen at Haddo House. Emma Inglis curated the exhibition Stitched: Scotland’s Embroidered Art (25 October – 18 January 2025) at Dovecot Studios and oversaw a groundbreaking conservation programme focused on preserving the National Trust for Scotland’s exquisite collection of domestic textiles.
