Step into the chaotic, brilliant, and rebellious history of the world’s greatest arts festival
FINAL THREE DATES IN AUGUST
Every August, Edinburgh fills with performers, comedians, theatre-makers and audiences from around the world. The city becomes a maze of venues, posters, queues and performances, but have you ever wondered how this wonderfully chaotic festival came to be?
Behind the dizzying chaos lies a remarkable story of artistic rebellion.
In 1947, eight uninvited theatre companies turned up on the fringes of the official International Festival. What began as an unofficial act of artistic rebellion would grow into the Edinburgh Fringe.
Led by an experienced local guide and self-confessed arts & history nerd, this 90-minute story-led walk takes you away from the busiest parts of the Royal Mile and into the historic closes, atmospheric courtyards and hidden corners where the story of the Fringe unfolded.
What You’ll Experience
Small groups, big stories: With a maximum of 10 guests, there’s room for questions, conversation and a more personal experience of Edinburgh's Old Town.
The backstory behind the stages: Go beyond the posters and packed venues to uncover the human struggles, controversies, breakthroughs and unlikely characters that helped shape the Fringe.
Playful mini-challenges: History doesn't have to be serious. Test your Fringe knowledge along the way with small prizes for those who get it right.
A local insider's perspective: Finish with practical, candid tips for navigating today's Fringe, understanding its different venues and finding your way beyond the obvious crowds.
Who is this for?
Perfect if you're:

A local who's surrounded by the Fringe every August but has never really learned its story
A performer or theatre-lover who wants to connect with the history of the festival

Come curious. Leave seeing the Fringe differently.
