Formed in 2004 under the name Rachel Unthank and the Winterset before adopting their current moniker in 2009, The Unthanks are an award-winning folk group from Tyneside, England. At the core of the band are sisters Rachel and Becky Unthank, alongside composer, pianist, and producer Adrian McNally. Celebrated for their approach to storytelling, the band uses traditional Northumbrian folk music as a foundation while seamlessly incorporating elements of jazz, classical, ambient, and art-rock. Their 2005 debut, Cruel Sister, was named Mojo Magazine's Folk Album of the Year, and they have since built an acclaimed discography including the Mercury Music Prize-nominated The Bairns (2007), Last (2011), Mount the Air (2015), and Sorrows Away (2022). Known for their striking sibling harmonies and adventurous orchestrations, they have earned a dedicated following and high praise from fans across the musical spectrum.
