Join an organised visit to the Energy from Waste Plant on Marsh Barton Trading Estate, Exeter. Come and find out about the past, present and future of waste in Devon!

Find out what happens to waste in Devon from local experts from Devon County Council, immerse yourself in the exclusive History of Waste timeline, and discuss what the future of waste should look like.

This tour lasts 2.5 hours and includes refreshments in our Education Room, a talk about the current waste picture and a presentation about the Energy from Waste Plant in Exeter, followed by a tour of the control room and viewing platform and ending with a discussion of the solutions to our waste issues. There’s plenty of room for questions throughout the morning, whether it’s that thing you’ve always wanted to know about waste and recycling or a query that comes to you when viewing what happens to our rubbish! You can finish with a go on the Grabber Game and take another look at the History of Waste.

Health & Safety Information

People attending this event should familiarise themselves with the health and safety information (PDF). Please read the section on page 2 of this document headed 'Possible hazards and appropriate precautions'. You do not need to complete or sign the form.

This visit takes place at the Exeter Energy Recovery Facility, which is a working waste management facility. All visitors will receive a health and safety briefing at the start of the visit. Please follow all instructions given by site staff throughout the tour.

This visit is for adults only.

If you, or anyone in your group, has a mobility or health condition that may affect their safety during the visit or in the event of an evacuation, please contact the organisers beforehand.

The facility can be noisy and may have strong or unpleasant smells. If you have sensory sensitivities, please take this into consideration and bring ear protection if required.

We recommend comfortable, practical clothing. Dresses and skirts are not recommended. Sturdy, enclosed footwear covering the sides and toes must be worn. Trainers are suitable, Sandals and other open footwear are not permitted.

Hard hats and protective safety glasses will be provided and must be worn when visiting the viewing platform.

Visitors may only enter the site as part of the organised tour and not at any other time without prior approval.

Arriving at the facility

There is car parking available on site. Where possible, please consider car sharing or travelling by public transport.

If arriving by car, please reverse park in the designated parking spaces.

If arriving on foot, please use the pedestrian entrance halfway along the site fence line, rather than the main vehicle entrance.

A member of staff will meet visitors at the main entrance to the building.
