Archaeologist Alan Endacott and Archaeoastronomer Carolyn Kennett delve into theories around Dartmoor's ritual landscapes.

Join us for a fascinating evening as we delve into the history and theories around Dartmoor's ritual landscapes. Carolyn and Alan will share insights into the celestial alignment, and potential purposes, of Dartmoor's standing stones, stone circles and stone rows.

Dartmoor has the highest concentration of Bronze Age remains in Britain, with many past generations living, farming and burying their dead on the moor. Much of this archaeology is freely accessible and well preserved, offering a wonderful oppotunity for us to learn about how Bronze Age people lived, and what was important to them.

Carolyn Kennett: The Celestial Landscape of Prehistoric Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor

Carolyn Kennett is a writer, researcher, historian and astronomer who lives in Cornwall. She is the current chair of the Society for the History of Astronomy and a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. She owns Archaeoastronomy Cornwall and Under Dark Skies.

Alan Endacott: Prehistoric Ritual Landscapes of North-eastern Dartmoor

Alan was born in a Dartmoor longhouse, on the family farm near Throwleigh. He started collecting social history material from the age of seven and went on to become the founder Curator of the Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton in 1981. He also managed Finch Foundry in Sticklepapth from 1989 until it was handed over to the National Trust in 1994. He attained a Diploma and an MA in Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. He served as Area Manager for Devon and Cornwall for English from 1996-2004 before setting up a stained glass studio in Cornwall. He relocated this to his native Throwleigh in 2019 and is currently pursuing a life-long passion for Dartmoor’s archaeology as a self-funding PhD researcher with the University of Exeter, studying the Prehistoric Ritual Landscapes of North-eastern Dartmoor. He discovered the Sittaford stone circle in 2007 and DPA volunteers subsequently helped to reveal more of the stones. Last year he led excavations on two more of his stone circle discoveries, near Taw Marsh, Belstone, with the help of a generous grant from the DPA.
