A practical workshop to learn how to make and prime your canvas, accessible to any level of experience
Canvas Making - Practical workshop
An often lost part of routine studio practise, the production of an artist's own art supplies gives greater autonomy over the quality of surfaces and materials they use, whilst also offering much greater economy.
Assembling and preparing different supports gives artists full control and liberty over the size and texture of their painting surfaces, allowing them to work with better materials, made for their specific needs.
In this class you will learn all you need to know to stretch and prime your own canvas, from choosing the stretchers and the fabric, to priming your canvas.
The class will cover:
- What tools you will use and how do they work
- How to choose the stretcher bars and how to assemble a stretcher frame
- How to choose the fabric to use for your canvas
- How to measure, cut and stretch the canvas on your frame
- How to identify and remedy faults in the stretched canvas
- How to choose and make your canvas primer
- How to size and prime your canvas for any technique you will be using
All the materials are provided.
The stretchers provided are 30x40cm
You can bring your own materials if you wish to work on different dimensions (nothing over 50x60cm)
The finished surface will be yours to keep, along with your primer of choice.
This workshop is accessible to any level of experience and knowledge of the topic.
The workshop will include explanations and demonstrations from the teacher, which you’ll then put into practice.
Any question is encouraged and any knowledge and tips you want to share are welcomed.
It is recommended to bring:
- Comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty
- Pen and notepad to write the recipes and instructions for future reference.
- A large bag or backpack to take away your finished painting surfaces
Due to limitations of space and materials, a maximum of 5 people can attend each workshop.
The workshop will be taking place at the second floor of the building. Please inform us if you need the lift to be made available.
The cost of the workshop is £60. £5 is to secure a place given the limited availability.
The difference is payable on the day of the course in cash, card or bank transfer.
Attend both Canvas and Painting Panel Making workshops in a day for a total price of £100.
Get in touch for a refund if you are not able to attend.
