Join The Hunterian at Kelvin Hall for a film screening and Q&A of Nicola Black's documentary 'Caroline Walker: Women's Work' Friday 13th November, 5.30-8pm Free but ticketed, please book here . Caroline Walker: Women’s Work follows the internationally renowned Scottish artist over four years as Walker makes large-scale paintings representing the unseen, often undervalued aspects of women’s labour, from hospitals to hotels, nail bars to nursery settings. Walker’s paintings reveal the invisible labour that shapes women’s lives, from housework to caregiving to creative production. Weaving together footage from Walker’s studio, her family life, and interviews with the female subjects of her paintings, the film questions the role that art can play in depicting the social politics of reproductive labour, nurture and care for the next generation. Blurring the line between observer and observed, Walker continually questions the act of representation through the prism of the female gaze. Following the artist as she prepares for solo exhibitions in London, Edinburgh, Wakefield and New York, the film intersperses footage of Walker with her family at home and painting in her studio, with recordings of the women pictured in these paintings, drawing out the points of synchronicity between her work and lived experience. As the film follows Walker through pregnancy and the birth of her second child, it explores the role of the ‘artist mother’, until recently viewed as taboo in contemporary art. Through privileged access to the artist’s life and work, the film reveals how motherhood has shaped Walker’s approach, while acknowledging the importance of her own mother, Janet, in inspiring and supporting her creativity. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with artist Caroline Walker and filmmaker Nicola Black. Running Order 5.30pm – Welcome Drinks 6.00–7.00pm – Film Screening 7.00–7.30pm – Q&A 7.30–8.00pm – Closing Drinks Biographies Caroline Walker is known for her accomplished paintings exploring the social, cultural and economic experiences of women living and working in contemporary society, often focusing on labour that is overlooked or unseen. Walker was born in Dunfermline, Scotland (1982) where she now lives and works. She received a BA in Painting from Glasgow School of Art in 2004 and an MA in Painting from The Royal College of Art in 2009. She has had solo exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield (UK), Pallant House Gallery (UK); K11 Art Foundation (CN); and KM21 (NL). Her work has also been included in exhibitions at Kettle's Yard (UK); Centraal Museum (NL); Kunstpalast Düsseldorf (DE); and Denison Museum (US). Walker is represented in a number of public collections including: Tate (UK); National Galleries of Scotland (UK); Museum of Fine Arts Houston (USA); Longlati Foundation (CN); Kunstmuseum Den Haag (NL). In 2027 she will present commissions for Art on the Underground and Dulwich Picture Gallery (UK). Nicola Black is a BAFTA-winning filmmaker who has made documentaries on wide-ranging subjects, from James Ellory to Peter Sellers, Montgomery Clift to Freddie Mercury, each garnering international audiences. Nicola is passionate about the visual arts and has previously made documentaries about Sir Stanley Spencer, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jenny Saville for the BBC, and Francis Bacon for Channel 4. Caroline Walker: Women ’ s Work is a deeply personal film in which Nicola explores many of the themes that preoccupy women in their daily lives as they maintain careers while also nurturing and caring for the next generation.
