Formal Sppeedwear are an art-rock and new-wave trio consisting of Beck Clewlow (bass, vocals, synthesisers), Charlie Ball (guitar, synthesisers), and Connor Wells (drums, guitar, synthesisers). Refusing to leave their hometown for a larger city, they famously built their own recording studio out of charity shop finds and secondhand gear. Loitering at the intersection of post-punk, synth-pop, and krautrock, their sound pairs David Byrne-esque vocals with jagged, geometric guitar riffs and bubbling basslines. After gaining a reputation for precision-engineered studio tracks and a kinetic live presence, the band is set to release their debut album, Punch Card, in September.
