GIOfest XVIII — Final Night
Rie Nakajima, Corey Mwamba & Robert Burke with Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra
GIOfest XVIII culminates in a concert bringing three remarkable international artists into the world of Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra.
For the final night, GIO is joined by Rie Nakajima, Corey Mwamba and Robert Burke, three artists whose practices approach improvisation from strikingly different directions, spanning sound sculpture and everyday objects, contemporary jazz and experimental music, electronics, percussion and saxophone.
Rie Nakajima is a Japanese artist and sculptor whos performances exist somewhere between sculpture and music. Using motorised devices, found materials and everyday objects, Nakajima creates environments in which objects begin to produce their own fragile, unpredictable musical relationships.
Corey Mwamba is a Derby-based improviser, composer and researcher and one of the distinctive voices in contemporary British improvised music. Working principally with vibraphone, alongside dulcimer, electronics and small instruments, his music moves freely between jazz, experimental music, texture, melody and abstraction.
Rob Burke from Australia is one of Australia’s most experienced improvising saxophonists, with a global reptation as a performer across multiple genres. Rob is also a leading researcher in jazz and improviser music.
