A discussion between Still Glasgow and collection artist Madelon Hooykaas and the Director of Street Level Photoworks, Malcolm Dickson.

Please join us for a discussion between the internationally renowned photographer and pioneering video artist and filmmaker, Madelon Hooykaas, and the Director of Street Level Photoworks, Malcolm Dickson. GoMA is delighted that Madelon is over from Amsterdam, where she lives and works, while the significant early work she made with Elsa Stansfield (1945–2004) – What’s It To You? (1975) is on display in Still Glasgow. They worked collaboratively for more than 30 years as Stansfield/Hooykaas until Stansfield's death in 2004 and Glasgow Life Museums recently acquired the last work they made together, Day for Night IV (2001/2004), for the collection. Their work is held in UK and international collections and Madelon continues to make bold new work with recent residencies in Venice and Maison Dora Maar Cultural Centre, Ménerbes, France, and has an upcoming solo exhibition planned for October 2027 in ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany.

Malcolm Dickson has written on Stansfield/Hooykaas’ work for publications and exhibition catalogues, and more recently for the monograph on Madelon Hooykaas - The Artist as Explorer was published by Jap Sam Books in 2023.

This is a unique opportunity to hear from this important artist in Glasgow and there will be an opportunity for a Q&A with the audience.

More information on the exhibition Still Glasgow is on the Glasgow Life Museums' website.

This event is part of the Season of Photography 2026, a celebration of photography in Scotland running 1 September – 20 December 2026. For more information please visit the Season of Photography 2026 website
