A panel discussion exploring classism in Scotland’s arts and cultural sector, the barriers it creates, and what we can do to challenge them.
Scotland has a thriving arts and cultural sector, celebrated for its creativity, diversity and progressive values. But how accessible is that world to people from working-class backgrounds? And how willing are our cultural institutions to confront the inequalities that exist within their own ranks?
Despite widespread commitments to inclusion and representation, class remains an uncomfortable and often overlooked dimension of inequality in the arts. From access to funding, education and professional networks to the unspoken rules governing taste, language and cultural legitimacy, working-class artists can face barriers that are difficult to identify, let alone challenge.
And while working-class stories are increasingly celebrated, questions remain about who gets to tell them, who decides which stories are worth telling, and who ultimately benefits.
Perfect Praxis: Class, Culture and the Politics of Permission brings together artists, writers, practitioners and cultural commentators for a candid discussion about classism in Scotland's arts sector.
Moving beyond familiar conversations about representation, the panel will examine the relationship between class, cultural power and opportunity, while asking what meaningful change might actually look like.
