Alastair Hart as we commemorating the 250th anniversary of Port Glasgow
PG250 Port Glasgow Shipbuilding – here, there and everywhere.
This talk was developed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Port Glasgow and the installation of the new COMET replica in the town.
The shipbuilding history of Port Glasgow is highlighted with some examples from the time of the Wood family, early 1800s, through to more recent examples from the late 1970s when Lithgows Ltd. built the largest ship in the UK.
One theme is engineering excellence and achievement; the talk also touches on Lithgows’ involvement with overseas shipyards and the shift in shipbuilding to Japan/S.Korea/China; some aspirations from the 1970s of how Port Glasgow shipbuilding may have developed are illustrated with some final thoughts on what may be taken from that period in the town’s history.
