To coincide with our Reid Gallery exhibition, The Married Life of Atoms: The Harry Kerr Bursary, we are pleased to host a special in conversation event with Danielle Macleod and Martha McCulloch, chaired by Christina McBride.

Danielle Macleod is a lens-based artist from the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. A Glasgow School of Art graduate, her work explores cultural narratives, folklore, and the bond between land and people. Using medium format film and wearable sculptures made from natural materials, she reinterprets Hebridean traditions and creates space for personal mythology. Her process, combining sculpture and photography, explores themes of place, rootedness, and belonging in rural environments.

Her recent project Gorm an Fheòir — The Blue of the Grass (supported by the Harry Kerr Bursary) uses sustainable techniques like caffenol film development, cyanotype printing, and botanical toning with local plants. Each step was shaped by the environment—a place-based approach she continues to develop.

Martha McCulloch is a coordinator at Artlink, based at Fort Dunree in the north-west of Donegal, Ireland. Originally from Glasgow, Martha was a founding co-Director of Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow, from its inception in 1989 until 1995, after which she taught in the Fine Art Photography department at The Glasgow School of Art from 1995 to 2000. Martha and Harry moved to Donegal in Ireland in the autumn of 2000, and established a commercial photography business whilst continuing to pursue their own personal art and photography projects.

Christina McBride is a lens-based artist and educator in the School of Fine Art. Her practice centres on analogue photography and the development of sustainable, environmentally responsible materials and methodologies. Informed by feminist writing and environmental philosophy, her research explores landscape as both subject and site – a place where questions of materiality, language, and lineage converge. She is also developing a photographic archive which examines intertwined histories of migration between Ireland and Scotland, with a particular focus on womens’ experience.
