Dick gave a lecture stating definitively that we live in a computer simulation: for him, the parallel worlds that featured in his novels reflected the innumerable “branches” of a preprogrammed reality. Architect-turned-musician Eric Vernhes became fascinated by this lecture, not for its content, but for what it said about the author’s own troubled psychology.
