About This Event

Raison d’être is a vibrant new series of seven paintings by Coco, an artist working in Project Ability’s Reconnect studios. Each painting represents one of the seven deadly sins, explored through bold colour, expressive portraiture and playful pattern. The works invite us to reflect on the emotions, desires and behaviours that shape how we see ourselves and others. Coco’s striking use of colour and stylised figures transforms each sin into a distinct character, creating portraits that are at once playful, powerful and thought-provoking. At the heart of Raison d’être is the idea of reflection: looking inward and considering the parts of ourselves that are often hidden, complicated or difficult to acknowledge. The seven sins become a lens through which to explore temptation, identity, self-image and human nature. Rather than presenting these qualities simply as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, Coco’s paintings encourage us to consider the complexity of being human. Presented as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival, the solo exhibition offers an opportunity to pause, look closely and perhaps recognise something of ourselves within Coco’s vivid and imaginative portraits.
