About This Event

The Glasgow Museums Resource Centre will host a free event on November 17, 2026, titled "From Hagstones to Hopkins: Magic and Witchcraft." This engaging exploration will trace the evolution of witchcraft from historical contexts to modern perceptions. Led by outreach assistants and experts in occult history, the event will delve into how the image of witches has transformed over time, reflecting broader theological and socio-political changes. Attendees can expect a nuanced understanding of this often-stereotyped figure as they journey through the dark half of the year, uncovering rich historical narratives and challenging common misconceptions.

In the present day, witches are viewed as monsterous stereotypes armed with broomsticks, cauldrons, and pointy hats. However, the figure of the witch as we now know it did not emerge from nowhere - instead, it was forged over time, mirroring various theological and socio-political ideals in the process. So, in the spirit of the dark half of the year, join outreach assistant and occult history researcher Molly Hughes, as she picks out several objects related to magic and witchcraft from the GMRC's expansive collection, examining the accuracy of this modern stereotype and how it came to be.
