Wasps Hanson Street Open Studios invites the public to explore artist studios in a former cigarette factory, now home to around 150 artists. The event includes a group exhibition and open studios, showcasing a diverse range of artistic talent.
The anniversary celebrations will invite visitors inside the former cigarette factory, which was transformed by Wasps in 2001 into affordable artist studios. Today, Hanson Street supports around 150 artists and makers across 77 studios and is home to Glasgow Ceramics Studio and Glasgow Glass Studio. To mark the occasion, there will be a group exhibition and open studios weekend, allowing the public a rare opportunity to explore the private workspaces of the wide variety of artists based there from jewellers to painters, and paper makers to ceramicists. Bringing together both established and emerging talent, the event reflects the breadth and energy of the artistic community that has grown within the building over the past quarter-century. Artist voices will sit at the heart of the anniversary story, with those participating reflecting on what the studios have meant to their personal and professional development. Their perspectives will highlight the significance of the anniversary, and the creative legacy that is represented by the open studios weekend. Steven Graham, member of the Glasgow Glass Studio since 2017, has said of his time at Hanson Street: “For me, working at Hanson Street means being part of a community where talent inspires talent every day. It's great to be surrounded by motivated, generous creatives who contribute to this special place. The Glasgow Glass Studio has also recently extended into another space, meaning we can offer more classes and workshops, and we're excited to show that off for open studios.” Joanna Kinnesrly-Taylor is a renowned printmaker, based at Hanson Street since 2001. She says of her studio and the commemorations: “I moved into my studio 25 years ago, and it has proved a space where my printed textile practice can flourish. Alongside developing my own work, I have undertaken public commissions and been able to teach and run courses. I can accommodate my specialist print equipment, and the north light is perfect, especially for colour matching. I look forward to showing visitors around during the Open Studios weekend.” Kate Gray, Wasps CEO, said: "For 25 years, Hanson Street has provided a unique transformed space where artists can develop their practice, build their careers, connect with others and grow. At Wasps, we believe creative communities need secure infrastructure, and Hanson Street continues to play a vital role in Glasgow’s cultural life, supporting the artists who help define the city's cultural identity through their creativity, collaboration and contribution to civic life." Everyone is invited to celebrate this milestone at the open studios weekend, as the artists look forward to inviting visitors to see behind the scenes at their studios, granting them the opportunity to get acquainted with local makers and discover artistic processes.
