Come, climb to the top of the Tower, take pictures, enjoy the views, and learn more about St Mary's history
10am-3:30pm Saturday 12th September for Tower climbing - church open 10am-4pm
During the Heritage Weekend we open our doors to everyone to learn more about the history of Horsell and the church. We also offer the chance to climb to the top of the Tower to experience breathtaking views of the village and surrounding area.
Book your slot to climb up the Tower! There are magnificent views from the top of the Tower, especially looking north over the Surrey and Berkshire countryside. There's a whole new view now that the cedar tree has been removed. Can you spot your house? Can you see the shops? Spot how twisty the High Street is! What else can you see?
There are 64 steps to climb to reach the top of the Tower. The twisting staircase is aged and narrow in places. You will need to be fit enough to climb and not be claustrophobic. For safety reasons, no child under the age of 8 is allowed to go to the top of the Tower.
Those aged between 8-17 must have an adult over 18 years old with them.
We want you to have the best experience climbing to the top of the Tower and admiring the views, so we are limiting the number of visitors to 6 at any one time at the top of the Tower.
There will be a volunteer at the top of the Tower throughout.
Please arrive 5 minutes before your booked time for a safety brief.
Before and after your booked slot, or throughout the weekend, go round the church and enjoy the displays of informative guides and notes telling you the history of the church dating back to the 12th century. See if you can find your address on a huge map of Horsell, from late 19th century. You will see some rare and fascinating sketches dating back to 1823. You will be able to view an interesting book put together by the researchers of the Arts Society, who took time to research, measure and record what was available and unearthed some new information about St Mary's Church.
It's going to be a busy and, for those climbing, a physically challenging event. Please plan enough time to allow yourself a break to sit down and enjoy our delicious refreshments.
Donations are gratefully received and used to maintain our Grade II listed church building and the Tower.
A suggested donation is £5 per person - you can give via Parish Giving. Alternatively there will be a donations bucket and a card reader available on the day.
If you are unable to make your slot, do let us know by contacting the office on 01483 772134 or via stmaryshorsell@btinternet.com before 12pm Friday 11th September.
Please book to guarantee your time slot to climb the Tower. Book now to avoid disappointment.
