Discover how needlework was taught to generations of schoolgirls, then pick up a needle yourself. Part of Guildford Festival of the Arts.
This free afternoon led by Amy Stone combines original research with hands-on stitching, inspired by objects from the Museum's own collection.
For over a century, sewing was a compulsory part of a girl's education, taught not just as a practical skill, but as a lesson in discipline, patience and "proper" femininity. Join us for an afternoon that uncovers this history and puts it in your hands.
Drawing on original research into how needlework was taught in schools, this event blends a short illustrated talk with a hands-on stitching session, using stitching to bring the techniques of the past to life.
No sewing experience required — just curiosity and a willingness to have a go. All materials provided.
Please note: this event will take place on the first floor of Guildford Museum which is housed in a historic building. There is no lift and the room is accessed by a flight of 17 steps. There is a handrail on one side. We will have access to a portable induction loop on the day.
