About This Event

The Portrait in Britain covers the early 17th century Flemish artists who brought realism to British portraiture. The workshop will explore techniques including novels, plays, poems, short stories, and memoirs.

In the early 17th century, immigrant Flemish artists brought a new realism and sophistication to British portraiture. They included Daniel Mytens, Peter Lely, and – most spectacularly – Anthony Van Dyck. The course also covers the civil war and commonwealth period, including native-born painters William Dobson and the talented miniaturist Samuel Cooper as we explore links between portraiture and 17th century history.
