Saturday 14 November | 4.00pm Some afternoons call for music that follows a familiar path. Others are better left to improvisation. With Strange Cocktails , pianist, composer and improviser Richard Erickson brings together jazz, blues, original compositions and spontaneous musical detours for a performance shaped by the moment. Drawing on a career across the UK and the United States, Richard has played at venues including the 606 Club, Southbank Centre and The Bull’s Head, and collaborated with musicians such as Stacey Kent, Martin Shaw and Gerard Presencer. His musical world reaches beyond jazz, too, encompassing theatre, contemporary dance and ballet, including his feature-length jazz ballet Carmen . The afternoon begins with Richard at the piano, moving between expressive melodies, deep blues and adventurous improvisation. In the second set, guitarist C.J. Berry joins him. Berry’s recording credits include Heidi Berry’s Firefly , the Creation Records compilation Doing It for the Kids , and Below the Waves . Expect an intimate live music experience where the mood can shift from reflective to rhythmically spirited, and no two musical moments need be alike. Food is served from 12 noon , so come early for a leisurely meal before the music. At Barnaby’s Lounge, Hastings, the afternoon is about listening closely, discovering something unexpected and letting the music take the lead.
