The Sustainable Farming Scheme From Policy to the Farm Gate

The ALA and UKELA Wales are delighted to invite you to The Sustainable Farming Scheme From Policy to the Farm Gate Event.

This joint Agricultural Law Association and UKELA Wales event will focus on the Welsh Government's Sustainable Farming Scheme and its practical implications for farmers and advisers.

Chaired by HHJ Milwyn Jarman KC, Chancery Judge for Wales, the session will begin with a panel discussion featuring Gareth Parry (Head of Policy, Farmers' Union of Wales), Dr Nerys Llewelyn Jones (Partner, Agri Advisor Legal LLP and Chair of the Agricultural Law Association) and Hywel Morgan (Cymru Chair, Nature Friendly Farming Network), followed by small-group discussion.

Whether you are already participating in the Scheme, considering whether to join, advising those who are, or simply trying to understand what the future holds for Welsh farming, this event offers an opportunity to hear directly from farming, environmental and legal perspectives and join the conversation yourself.

Attendance is intended to count towards two hours of Sustainable Farming Scheme CPD. Attendees will receive a certificate of attendance together with a document explaining how the event meets the relevant SFS CPD requirements, which can be retained and submitted as evidence when recording CPD for Scheme purposes.

Biographies

HHJ Milwyn Jarman KC (Chair)

HHJ Milwyn Jarman KC was called to the Bar in 1980 at Gray’s Inn and is now a Bencher. He practised from 9 Park Place, Cardiff, specialising in chancery and planning law. In 2001 he took silk and became a Recorder. In 2007 he became the Chancery Judge for Wales, a judge of the Administrative Court and of the Upper Tribunal. He is a Diversity and Community Relations Judge and has tutored on Judicial College seminars. He has chaired the Legal Wales Foundation Board and served as a member of the Civil Procedure Rule Committee. He is a member of the Gorsedd, a governor of Christ College Brecon and an Honorary Fellow of Aberystwyth University.

Gareth Parry, Head of Policy, Farmers' Union of Wales

As FUW Head of Policy, Gareth is responsible for directing and managing the Union's Policy Team, alongside leading on key areas including the Sustainable Farming Scheme, international trade and agricultural budgets. He is also responsible for directing the servicing of the Union's Standing Committees, which are central to the FUW's grassroots democratic structure.

Gareth has a family background in agriculture and lives on a mixed beef and sheep farm near Aberystwyth. Prior to joining the Policy Team, he completed a degree in Agriculture and Business Studies at Aberystwyth University with first-class honours.

Dr Nerys Llewelyn Jones, Partner, Agri Advisor Legal LLP and Chair of the Agricultural Law Association

Dr Nerys Llewelyn Jones was raised on a family farm in West Wales and continues to live and work within the agricultural sector.

In 2011, Nerys established Agri Advisor Legal LLP, which now consists of ten offices and a team of more than fifty individuals, many of whom come from rural backgrounds. A native Welsh speaker, she advises on a wide range of matters including succession and estate planning, agricultural, environmental and planning law, and rural disputes.

Her doctorate focused on the implementation and enforcement of law and policy relating to sustainable agriculture. She is the current Chair of the Agricultural Law Association.

Hywel Morgan, Cymru Chair, Nature Friendly Farming Network

Hywel Morgan is a tenth-generation beef and sheep farmer from Esgairllaethdy, Myddfai, near Llandovery, on the western edge of Bannau Brycheiniog. The family farm runs suckler cows, Cheviot × Welsh Mountain sheep and Welsh Mountain ponies, with common land grazing playing a key role in the business.

Hywel is Chair of NFFN Cymru, Agriculture Advisor to Plantlife Cymru, a Farming Connect Mentor, Deputy Chair of the British Wool Cymru Committee, a Community Councillor and Secretary of the local Commons Grazing Association. He is passionate about Welsh farming policy, common land grazing and supporting the next generation of farmers.
