Castleshaw reservoirs and the remains of the Castleshaw Roman Fort

Join local BMC volunteer Ruth Topham for a friendly, peer-led social walk through the beautiful Saddleworth countryside. Set at an easy pace with plenty of opportunities to chat and take in the surroundings, this walk is perfect for anyone looking to enjoy great company and inspiring landscapes.

Along the way, you'll experience three iconic named trails—the Standedge Trail, the Pennine Way and the Pennine Bridleway—before reaching a trig point with stunning panoramic views across Saddleworth. The return journey passes the picturesque Castleshaw Reservoirs and the fascinating remains of Castleshaw Roman Fort, adding a touch of local history to a memorable day outdoors.

Whether you're new to hill walking or simply looking to explore somewhere new with like-minded people, this is a fantastic opportunity to discover the landscape, build confidence and enjoy a great day on the trails.

Meet the Leader

Ruth has been hill walking since she had to take three steps to her father’s one step as a young child! Since then she has hiked and run in the UK and Europe. She is an experienced walk leader who loves spending time outdoors no matter the weather and is very passionate about the local area. Ruth is a serving member of a local Mountain Rescue Team. Ruth is qualified in outdoor first aid and is a mental health first aider.

Distance: Approximately 9 km (6 miles)

Ascent: 280 m (840 ft)

Duration: Approximately 4 hours

Public Transport: Buses from Huddersfield or Oldham stop on the A62 approximately half a mile from the walk start

What to Bring

We’ll cover a range of terrains, so please ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear

Footwear: Sturdy, water-resistant hiking boots or shoes with good grip

Clothing: Dress in layers, including a warm layer and waterproofs. As conditions can vary; bring a hat and gloves for Millstone Edge as it can be windy even when the valley is calm

Food and Drink: Bring enough food and water for a full day’s walk; there will be no places to purchase refreshments en route

Other Essentials: Although we plan to finish within daylight hours, carrying a small torch or head torch is advisable for emergencies

Who Can Attend

Anyone, under 18's must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Well behaved dogs are welcome but must be always kept on a short-fixed lead at all times with no exceptions, please indicate on your booking if you will be bringing a dog

Health Precautions: If you have any health conditions that might impact your participation, please inform us in advance. Carry any required medications, and let the walk leader know if assistance may be needed in accessing them

If you are unsure of your ability or would like advice regarding kit and suitability for this walk, please email the leader in advance

This walk incurs a £2 donation fee towards Mend Our Mountains. If you are unable to pay this fee, please contact us in advance, and we will anonymously include you for free
