Join us for our Alderman Sydney Smith Annual Lecture 2026 as we chat with Joseph on the topic of: Who Gets to Tell the Story?

Born and raised in Hull, Joseph Harker is the Guardian's senior editor, diversity and development. He is also co-founder of the Guardian Legacies of Enslavement project. Before joining the Guardian, Joseph was editor and publisher of the weekly newspaper Black Briton, and previous to that assistant editor at The Voice.

Join us for a wide-ranging conversation on storytelling and inclusive journalism. What does it mean to seek truth, challenge power and amplify voices that have historically been marginalised?

We are delighted to be collaborating with the media studies faculty and students of the University of Hull to make this event as engaging as possible.

The talk will begin at 4 pm and will take place at the Larkin Building, Lecture Theatre E, University of Hull, Cottingham Rd, Hull HU6 7RX.
