About This Event

Marine Energy Storysharing Workshops take place at the Hull Maritime Museum on 26 September 2026. Participants share stories about Whale Oil, Oil & Gas, and Renewables with the TRANSECTS team over lunch. The event includes creative activities and is free to attend.

Share your marine energy stories about Whale Oil, Oil & Gas, and Renewables with the TRANSECTS team over lunch and creative activities.

From whale oil, to oil and gas, and now offshore wind and other renewables, the Humber has been shaped by the energy we use.

But energy transitions aren't just about fuel. They change places, jobs, communities and the environment around them.

TRANSECTS is a research project looking at three big marine energy shifts in the Humber through the stories of locals who have experienced them:

Whale Oil (1800s - 1900s)

Oil and Gas (1960s - today)

Renewables (2000s - today)

Understanding past and present experiences - through these stories - can help us understand how to build a fairer, more resilient future for our coastal community.

Hull artist, Lauren Saunders, is working closely with researchers from the University of the Highlands and Islands, and the University of Hull, to creatively explore how our community understands, remembers and learns from these changing energies and livelihoods. Through a series of FREE themed workshops and walks, we are collecting stories and sharing histories relating to past and present marine energies.
