Dressmaking 3 Day course focusing on bra making.
Get to grips with all the intricacies of making your own lingerie.
Class Dates:
Set 1: Tuesdays: Week 1 - 8th Sept, Week 2 - 15th Sept, Week 3 - 22nd Sept.
In this 3 day class you will be able to bring in your own bra making project to make under the guidance of our experienced tutor. You will be shown how to measure yourself correctly and choose the correct starting size to make; how to trace off your pattern pieces and grade or adjust as necessary; and how to assemble your pattern, including using notches, inserting channelling, underwires, straps and fasteners.
You can choose from either a simple non-wired pattern, or a more complicated underwired bra with a seamed cup.
We strongly recommend starting with the soft cup bra pattern, the Lana Bralette, for beginners. (Please see further information below)
This list below is not exhaustive, but should help give you some ideas. These patterns are all digital pdf patterns which you will need to either print yourself and assemble at home, (ensuring they are printed to the correct scale), or you can send them off to a net printer who specialises in sewing patterns to print for you, such as CLC Printing in Essex or Flamingo Prints.
Suitable patterns are:
Non-wired patterns -
LilyPaDesigns -, Lanai, Mysa (free pattern)
Made for Mermaids - Lana, Bridgitte bralette
Evie La Luve - Willow, Darcey
Wired patterns:
LilyPaDesigns - Liora, Labellum
Pin-Up Girls - Shelley, Sherri
Orange Lingerie - Marlborough
Cashmerette - Willowdale
If this is the first time you have made a bra, I would recommend starting with the Lana Bra by Made for Mermaids. It is a soft cup pattern and has seamed cups, a cradle, adjustable straps and hook and eye fastenings but does not have the added complication of fitting an underwire. It is also drafted for stretch fabrics so it is going to be a more forgiving fit than some of the other patterns and can be made with fabrics that are easier to source, such as cotton jersey.
You will need to provide all your own fabric and notions. Lingerie fabrics are very specialised and you can rarely find them in bricks and mortar shops, your best best is to buy a kit on line that will have everything you need in it, as all the different elastics can be very confusing and it is easy to buy the wrong thing. I can recommend "The Bra Shop" on Etsy or "Seamesew Supplies", both of which sell bra making kits. They are both also very helpful and if you contact them once you have bought your pattern they can help make sure that a kit will contact everything you will need for your pattern.
Underwires are bought separately and I can guide you on that during the first lesson. You will NOT need to bring a sewing machine or overlocker as these will be provided for your use during the classes.
This class is over 3 days on consecutive weeks, you will need to be able to attend all the dates to make the best use of this course. Missed dates cannot be swapped.
