Join us for Nick Broomfield’s 1974 documentary on one of the longest rent strikes in British history. Radical Film School - Leeds presents: Behind the Rent Strike (1974) directed by Nick Broomfield “The only people who can change the working class position are the working class themselves.” In 1972, 3,000 tenants of Tower Hill estate in Kirkby, near Liverpool, refused to pay a rent increase imposed by the Housing Finance Bill, and held out for fourteen months in one of the longest rent strikes in British history. One of Nick Broomfield’s earliest films, made over a year alongside the strikers, it sits with the families carrying the fight: the kitchens, the meetings, the picket lines, and the humour that kept it all going. Time Out: “Brilliant documentary attempt to understand the 14 months’ rent strike by the people of Kirkby New Town, near Liverpool” RUNNING ORDER Doors: 7:00pm Behind the Rent Strike: 7:30pm - 8:30pm Pay as you can. Book free in advance, donations taken on the door. Everything raised goes towards Radical Film School Leeds, a free, peer-led film programme for underrepresented filmmakers, and helps keep it free. Bring your own drinks.
