Beaton’s first love was the stage, and this was reflected in his groundbreaking photographic style. Using elaborate sets, props, costume and lighting, he blurred the line between reality and artifice, turning photography into visual theatre. Staging Icons showcases more than 60 unforgettable works from the National Portrait Gallery’s extensive collection of Beaton photographs, some on display for the first time, while also revealing Harewood’s own connection to Beaton and his world.
