Lotherton Hall, located near Aberford in Leeds, has origins dating back to at least 1775, when a manor house on the site appeared on Thomas Jeffery’s map of Yorkshire. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, it passed through several owners—including Thomas Maude, the Raper family, and eventually Richard Oliver Gascoigne, who purchased the estate in 1825. The Gascoigne family shaped much of Lotherton’s later history, with Colonel Frederick Gascoigne and his wife Gwendolen transforming the earlier Georgian structure into the elegant Victorian–Edwardian mansion seen today, complete with formal gardens designed before the First World War.

During World War I, Lotherton Hall served as a Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.) hospital, supporting wounded soldiers and utilizing its 12th‑century Norman chapel, which had been restored between 1913 and 1917. In 1968, Sir Alvary Gascoigne and his wife gifted the estate to the City of Leeds, and it opened to the public the following year as part of Leeds Museums & Galleries. Today, Lotherton Hall houses significant art collections—including the Gascoigne Gift—and remains a popular heritage attraction known for its gardens, bird sanctuary, and preserved Edwardian character.

Although Lotherton Hall is rich in history, little is known about the ghosts that reside here. Staff have witnessed many occurances with shutters being opened by a mischeavious entity. A dog is said to roam the corridors that once belonged to Lady Gascoigne and a miltary man is said to watch over his prized war medals. The building has previously been untouched to paranormal investigators, until now!
